What Is World Bee Day?
In December, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus a resolution declaring 20 May as World Bee Day with the aim to raise public awareness and attention to the importance of protecting and preserving bees and other pollinators.
Why Are Bees Important?
Honey bees are a primary pollinator of plants, including crops, fruit and vegetables. They are important for the environment because:
- they help to grow 90% of the world’s wildflower plants
- a third of the world’s crops depend on bees to grow
- bees help to build ecosystems and maintain biodiversity
How Can You Help Bees And Other Pollinators?
- Get your garden buzzing by filling it with plants that attract bees
- Leave a small dish with a few pebbles and water to help out thirsty bees
- Support your local beekeeper by buying their honey – we have a selection of locally produced honey available in our Food Hall
Together, we can inspire and educate our friends and family about the importance of bees. That’s the best way to help protect this wonderful creature.
