What is Hedgehog Awareness Week?
Hedgehog Awareness Week is an annual event held in May, specifically from 5th to 11th May this year. Organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), it aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by our spiky garden visitors and how we can all contribute to their well-being.
Why Are Hedgehogs Important?
Hedgehogs are not only adorable but also serve as indicator species. If they’re struggling, it’s a sign that our habitat needs improvement. By helping hedgehogs, we indirectly benefit other wildlife and even ourselves!
How Can You ‘Welcome Wildlife’ During Hedgehog Awareness Week?
- Create Hedgehog Highways:
- Install 13cm x 13cm square gaps in boundary walls and fences. These “Hedgehog Highways” allow hedgehogs to move freely between gardens.
- Log your Hedgehog Highways at Big Hedgehog Map.
- Provide Shelter and Food:
- Log Piles, Leaf Piles, and Wild Corners: These attract natural food and offer shelter.
- Clean Shallow Water Bowls: Hedgehogs need water, especially during hot spells. Add pebbles for bees and butterflies.
- Ponds or Pools: If you have one, ensure escape routes for hedgehogs.
- Be Wildlife-Friendly:
- Avoid Poisons and Pesticides: These can harm hedgehogs and disrupt the food chain.
- Litter Awareness: While your garden may be tidy, litter elsewhere poses risks to wildlife. Encourage others to clean up.
- Raise Netting: Keep sports nets and garden netting raised 30cm off the ground to prevent hedgehogs from getting entangled.
- Check Before Mowing or Lighting Bonfires: Look out for hedgehogs!
If you’re looking for products specifically made for hedgehogs, we sell a range of hedgehog houses and nutritious food too.
Spread the Word!
Even if you don’t have a garden, you can make a difference. Encourage neighbours, friends, and family to join the effort. Let’s create fantastic habitats for hedgehogs together!
Remember, small actions during #HedgehogAwarenessWeek can have a big impact. 🌿🦔
