Every year on the 5th of June, World Environment Day reminds us that the choices we make today help shape the world we’ll leave for future generations. At Gordale, caring for the environment isn’t something we think about once a year – it’s a commitment that guides our decisions every day.
As a business rooted in gardening, nature and the outdoors, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. We see first-hand the importance of protecting our natural environment, encouraging biodiversity, and helping our customers make more sustainable choices in their homes and gardens. Sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a responsibility that we all share.

Why Sustainability Matters
Healthy ecosystems support the plants, wildlife and green spaces that bring so much value to our lives. By adopting more sustainable practices, we can help conserve natural resources, reduce waste, protect biodiversity and create a healthier future for generations to come.
At Gordale, we believe businesses have an important role to play. That’s why we continually look for ways to minimise our environmental impact and support sustainable development across our operations. We don’t simply aim to meet environmental standards – we strive to go beyond them wherever possible.
What We’re Doing at Gordale
Our commitment to sustainability can be seen throughout the business.

Recycling and Reducing Waste
We recycle as much as possible across our site, including cardboard, plant pots, polythene, metal, wood and paper. By reducing waste and maximising recycling opportunities, we’re helping to lessen our impact on the environment.

Protecting Natural Habitats
Our five acres of natural woodland provide an important habitat for wildlife while helping to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Alongside our woodland, our wildflower meadow and rewilding areas create valuable spaces where nature can thrive.

Supporting Pollinators
Bees play a vital role in our ecosystem, and we’re proud to support them through our wildflower meadow and on-site beehives. By creating pollinator-friendly habitats, we’re helping to support local biodiversity and encourage healthy ecosystems.

Making Sustainable Choices Easier
We actively work with suppliers who share our environmental values and continually look for products that help our customers garden more sustainably. The majority of our compost is now completely peat-free.

We Buy from Local Producers
Where possible, we buy from local producers, helping to reduce transport miles and lower our carbon footprint while supporting businesses within our local community. By sourcing locally, we’re able to champion regional suppliers and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient local economy.

Looking Ahead
The initiatives highlighted here are just some of the ways we’re working towards a more sustainable future. Across Gordale, we are continually reviewing our practices, exploring new opportunities, and making improvements that help reduce our environmental impact while supporting the natural world around us.
Sustainability is an ongoing journey, and we’re committed to building on the progress we’ve already made.
Together, we can make a difference – one garden, one choice and one sustainable step at a time.
Happy World Environment Day from everyone at Gordale!
