How to plant a hanging basket
Hanging baskets are a great way to add a splash of colour to walls and buildings. If you would like to create your own, here is a simple step-by-step guide of how to plant a hanging basket.
Choose a basket:
Start with a good-quality hanging basket. We have a selection of stylish faux rattan hanging baskets available.
If it isn’t pre-lined, then you will require a liner to hold in the compost. Add a layer of small stones at the bottom to prevent waterlogging.
Use the right compost:
Fill your basket with a high-quality, multi-purpose compost—preferably one that retains moisture, as hanging baskets tend to dry out quickly.
Select your plants:
Now it’s time to get creative! For an eye-catching design, use a mix of:
- Thrillers – striking, upright plants such as geraniums or fuchsias at the centre
- Fillers – vibrant, lush plants such as nemesia can be used to enhance the middle section
- Spillers – trailing plants including nasturtium and bidens provide cascading branches

If you’re not sure what to choose, we have a selection of hanging basket kits containing enough plants to fill a 30cm hanging basket.
Plant your basket
Begin by positioning your tallest plant in the centre, then surround it with your filler plants. Place your trailing plants near the edge so they can gracefully cascade over the sides. Firmly press them in and fill any gaps with compost.
Avoid overcrowding—your arrangement will naturally expand as it matures!
Water well:
Ensure that your newly planted basket receives a thorough soak, and make sure water drains properly. Hanging baskets require daily watering, particularly during warm weather.
Feed and maintain:
- Feed every week or two with a liquid fertilizer
- Deadhead faded flowers regularly
- Rotate your basket now and then for even sun exposure
