Summer’s in full swing, and while we all enjoy long sunny days, looking after your garden in hot weather can be a real challenge. Prolonged high temperatures and strong sun can take a toll on plants, lawns, and even soil health. But don’t worry – with a few simple steps, you can keep your garden thriving even in the hottest weather.
Here are our top tips for looking after your garden in hot weather:
1. Water Wisely
Water early or late: Water your garden in the early morning or after sunset to avoid evaporation and scorching.
Soak deeply: Give plants a good soak a few times a week rather than a little sprinkle daily – this encourages deep root growth.
Target the roots: Use watering cans or drip irrigation to direct water at the base of the plant, not the leaves.

2. Mulch for Moisture
A layer of mulch (bark, straw, or compost) helps lock in moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Apply a 5–8 cm layer around the base of plants and top it up as needed throughout the summer.

3. Shade Vulnerable Plants
Use shade cloth, old net curtains, or even a patio umbrella to protect delicate plants during the hottest part of the day. Pots and containers can be moved to shady spots temporarily.
4. Don’t Overfeed
Avoid heavy feeding during heatwaves. Plants under stress don’t process nutrients as efficiently. If feeding is necessary, use a diluted, slow-release fertiliser and water in well.
5. Look After Your Lawn
Consider watering your lawn just once a week during dry spells, giving it a deep soak rather than frequent light sprinkles. Raise the mower blade to keep the grass a little longer – this shades the roots and retains moisture.

6. Deadhead and Prune
Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new growth and reduce energy stress on your plants. Light pruning can also improve air circulation and reduce mildew risk in humid conditions.
6. Stay Alert for Pests
Hot, dry conditions can bring out aphids, red spider mites, and whitefly. Check the undersides of leaves regularly.
