Unfortunately, this year we are unable to source some of our usual seed potatoes due to a combination of factors, including crop failures and lack of stock from suppliers. Where possible, we have a range of alternative seed potatoes available that you may wish to consider:
Not available for 2025 – International Kidney (often known as Jersey Royal) is a unique and premium variety of early potato. Known for its waxy texture, nutty flavour, and suitability for growing in coastal regions with specific conditions it made an ideal salad potato.
Alternatives:
- Charlotte – one of the most popular waxy salad potatoes and is well-suited for similar culinary applications as International Kidney
- Maris Peer – another waxy salad potato with a creamy texture, ideal for salads and boiling, similar to International Kidney. It thrives in a range of climates and is a great option for gardeners looking for an alternative.
Not available for 2025 – Skywalker seed potato is a relatively new variety known for its high yield, strong disease resistance and ability to produce large, uniform tubers. It’s a maincrop potato that offers a versatile, all-purpose, waxy texture, making it suitable for boiling, mashing, and roasting.
Alternatives:
- Desiree – a popular maincrop variety known for their pink skin and creamy, nutty flavour. While they’re a bit more versatile than Skywalker, they also have excellent disease resistance and are a good alternative for those looking for a reliable all-rounder with great storage qualities.
- Sarpo Mira – a fantastic variety for gardeners looking for disease resistance, particularly against blight. Like Skywalker, it’s an excellent choice for maincrop production and stores well. The texture is waxy and holds together when boiled, making it a great option for a variety of dishes.
Not available for 2025 – Heidi Red a red-skinned, waxy variety that is prized for its firm texture, vibrant colour, and excellent culinary versatility. It’s a great all-purpose potato, especially for boiling, steaming, and making salads due to its waxy, creamy flesh.
Alternatives:
- Desiree – a popular red-skinned variety with a creamy, nutty flavour and a waxy texture. It works well for boiling and salads, just like Heidi Red, but also has a bit more versatility for mashing or roasting.
- Charlotte – an excellent waxy variety with a firm texture that holds up well in salads or when boiled. It’s often used as a substitute for other red-skinned waxy varieties and is perfect if you’re looking for something with a similar texture and taste.
Not available for 2025 – Pink Fir Apple known for its distinctive shape, earthy flavour, and ability to hold its form when boiled or steamed, making it a popular choice for salads and other delicate dishes.
Alternatives:
- Charlotte – widely grown waxy salad variety known for its smooth, golden-yellow skin and firm flesh. It has a mild, nutty flavour similar to Pink Fir Apple, and its waxy texture makes it perfect for boiling or adding to fresh salads.
- Maris Peer – a popular waxy variety with a similar creamy texture and nutty flavor to Pink Fir Apple. It is excellent for boiling and steaming, and holds its shape well in salads.
Not available for 2025 – Ulster Sceptre valued for its high yield, smooth texture, and versatility. It’s a maincrop, waxy variety with good disease resistance, and it’s often used for both boiling and making chips. Its firm texture means it holds together well when cooked, making it a reliable all-rounder for various dishes.
Alternatives:
- Sarpo Mira – a high-yielding, disease-resistant maincrop variety, much like Ulster Sceptre. It’s known for its waxy, firm texture, making it an excellent choice for roasting and mashing. It has strong blight resistance, so it’s perfect for gardeners looking for a reliable variety with a long storage life.
- Kestrel – have a waxy, creamy texture that makes them a good alternative to Ulster Sceptre. They are versatile, with excellent disease resistance, and perform well in various cooking methods, from boiling to roasting and even frying.
Not available for 2025 – Duke of York is an early-season, waxy potato known for its creamy, smooth texture, and excellent all-round qualities, making it perfect for boiling, mashing, and even roasting. It’s also valued for its ability to produce a reliable crop with early maturity.
Alternatives:
- Lady Christl – an early-season variety similar to Duke of York in terms of its waxy texture and versatile cooking qualities. It’s perfect for boiling and holds its shape well, making it ideal for salads and steaming. Like Duke of York, it matures early and offers a good, creamy texture.
- Winston – an early variety with a waxy texture and nutty flavour. It’s an excellent choice for boiling, steaming, and salads, with a similar creamy consistency to Duke of York. This variety also has resistance to common potato diseases, making it a reliable alternative.
Not available for 2025 – Red Duke of York a popular early-season, red-skinned potato, known for its waxy texture, creamy flesh, and versatility in the kitchen. It’s particularly valued for its excellent boiling quality, making it a great choice for fresh salads, steaming, and even roasting.

Not available for 2025 – Arran Pilot a popular early-season, waxy potato variety known for its smooth texture, excellent boiling quality, and relatively quick harvest time. It’s perfect for boiling, steaming, and adding to fresh salads.
Alternatives:
- Rocket – an early-maturing, waxy variety that offers a smooth texture and great versatility, just like Arran Pilot. It has a mild flavor and holds its shape well when boiled or steamed, making it ideal for fresh salads and other boiled dishes. It matures quickly, making it a reliable early-season choice.
- Lady Christl – a very early variety with a similar waxy texture and mild, nutty flavour. It holds its shape well when boiled or steamed, making it a perfect substitute for Arran Pilot in salads or boiled dishes. It’s one of the earliest maturing varieties, producing a crop in about 10–12 weeks.
